How to: Sea battle Empty How to: Sea battle

I'm not going to give tips on the forums on how to carry out a seabattle: it's much more effective to take a pair of sloops out with someone and practice. The key to sea battle is knowing how to move: to know how to move you have to understand how wind works, how whirlpools work, how rocks work; even if you can't find an officer to teach you, going out and engaging a friend gives you both the time to practice moving around without getting interrupted by the damage, grapples or disengages that accompanies practicing against brigands.

    • Damaging the enemy fills up their fight board; being damaged fills up yours.
    • Fighting without rum both makes your jobbers/swabbies less effective, and gives you a thinner fight board.
    • Payout from brigands and barbarians relies on a few things:
      • The poe payout 'ramps' up every time you win.
      • If you lose, you both lose a proportion of the money in the hold and booty, and your "payout level" ramps down. You'll get less money in the next battle! This is why many captains choose to disengage if severely damaged: it's much more profitable to win each battle, and a disengaged battle doesn't affect the poe ramp.
      • The difficulty of your opponent. A ship with a red might ring is harder to fight, but will give you more booty if you succeed.
      • Payout is affected by how well you win the fight. If you win and your entire team is still alive, you get a bigger boost to your poe ramp than if you win with only a few left. This is also true of losing: if you barely lost a fight, your poe ramp is affected less than if you suffered a crushing defeat.
    • Maxing your opponent therefore has a double bonus: by filling up their boards, your chance of winning by a greater margin (and therefore More Booty) increases.

The AI which guides how the bots move in particular situations is changed every so often to keep people on their toes, and to ensure things don't get too predictable. The best way of learning how to guess the bots' moves is to practice and to watch.

The AI reacts to changes in your planned moves (even if your white movement bar doesn't change). You can take advantage of this, but be warned: if you make changes in the last second (known as the LSM, the 'last-second move'), your move is flagged as an LSM. If you LSM twice in a row, the server considers it as an attempt to game the system, and your opponents will send significantly more damage in the brawl. Not good! Unlucky lag can also lead to this, so it's best to use LSM's with caution; it's not necessary to use them at all to become a good battle navver.

Finally, be careful when attacking ships with blue might rings: the deeper blue the ring, the more chance you have of being attacked by the Black Ship. The Black Ship ("El Pollo Diablo") is unshootable, ungrapplable, can move through rocks, knows your actual moves (unlike normal bots who only guess your probable moves), and is crewed by skeletons. Basically, you'll lose (and lose pretty much all of your booty). Be careful when picking on ships smaller and/or weaker than you!

Sea battle is one of the parts of the game most dependent on experience, so take the opportunity to practice or watch whenever you can! Even if you're not bnavving, remember that your puzzling increases your captain's chance of performing well, leading to a more successful fight and more poe for you all.
